I have something to say.

When I saw Greg Mortensen (author of Three Cups of Tea) today, he mentioned a study that interviewed college graduates and stated that two generations ago, (about 40 years) about 25% of college graduates said they wanted to make a difference in the world. The generation after that, (about 20 years ago) only 17% of college graduates wanted to make a difference, or a change in the world. And this generation, my generation, are finally started to get it! Some 40% of college graduates interviewed want to use their education to make a difference.

40%. He made it sound like that was a great increase. But to me that means 60% of college graduates are MORE interested in other things. . success, the American dream, what have you.

I am saddened by that. I want to make a difference. I want my children to make a difference. I want to influence others to want to make a difference. I want to do what we can to make things better for as many people as we can, so that maybe in another 20 years when we take the poll, we can double that number.

Maybe, if we start young enough, and care enough, and talk about it enough... then in another 20 years, 80% of our children graduating from college will want to make a difference. And THAT is a number to be reckoned with.
